Like you said, children need to learn that their wants aren't always the most important. I've been trying to teach my kids that there are other children out there that are in situations much worse than their own. I've been starting to give more donations to charities lately. This has been more for the purpose of teaching my kids than for the tax deduction. Like you said, charity should begin at home, not end there.
